Council Delays Hearings on Sport Chalet

Bowing to public pressure, the La Canada Flintridge City Council has reversed its March 5 decision to move ahead with public hearings on the proposed Sport Chalet shopping center before the April 10 election.
Instead, the council voted unanimously Tuesday to extend the hearings until after new council members are sworn in. The council will meet with developers March 29 to schedule a hearing date, most likely in early May.
The decision Tuesday represented a turnaround for four council members who, at the last council meeting, called for the hearings to proceed.
The decision to delay public hearings was a victory for residents who have called the election an informal referendum on the Sport Chalet development.
The $25-million Sport Chalet proposal calls for a 163,995-square-foot retail complex on 11.75 acres at Angeles Crest Highway and Foothill Boulevard.
