San Diego
Ground was broken Wednesday for a $38-million addition to the UC San Diego Central Library that will double its capacity.
The addition will be an underground, two-level structure in a U-shaped design, with windows and skylights to minimize a cloistered feeling. The decision to put the addition underground resulted from the university’s desire not to impinge on the image of the concrete-and-glass tower of the original structure, which has become a campus landmark.
Completion is expected in 1992.
