NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : New Amtrak Limits on Smoking Told
Two lawmakers who succeeded in snuffing out cigarettes on most domestic flights announced that Amtrak is about to limit smoking on trains and in stations. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and Rep. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) said Amtrak’s new policy will take effect April 1. Lautenberg and Durbin jumped the gun on Amtrak’s own announcement of the new policy, which had been scheduled for today. The new policy will continue to permit passengers to smoke in sleeping compartments and in limited areas elsewhere on trains.
