SWIMMING NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS : Texas, Stanford, USC Lead Field

The University of Texas men’s swimming team will be seeking its third consecutive title beginning tonight in the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Indiana University Natatorium in Bloomington, Ind.

The Longhorns, who have 13 swimmers entered, lead the nation in four events and are coming off an impressive victory in the Southwest Conference championships.

Stanford, last year’s runner-up, will have the largest team in the meet with 17 swimmers. The Cardinal will be looking for their fourth national championship in six years.

USC, which finished fifth last year, is led by Dave Wharton, the NCAA swimmer of the year in 1988 and 1989, and three-year All-Americans Ray Looze, Dan Jorgensen and Chris Chalmers.

UCLA, which was third in the NCAA meet last year, are led by Olympian Mark Dean and backstroker Geoff Cronin. The meet will continue through Saturday.
