That was a 10% increase from the second quarter of 1988, with the biggest jump, 30%, occurring in San Juan Capistrano. Three cities suffered dips from 1988--the largest being 8% in Placentia. TAXABLE SALES TREND The $6.8 billion in taxable sales in second quarter 1989 was by far the largest comparable period total for any of the last three years. This most recent figure was 9% higher than 1988’s second quarter and 14% more than 1987. It was also the largest total in the last 10 quarters except for 1988’s fourth quarter (fourth-quarter spending is normally higher than others because of holiday purchases).
