A 40-year-old Littlerock man was killed Thursday morning when his car left the roadway of the Antelope Valley Freeway and struck a utility pole, the California Highway Patrol reported.

William Sumner was killed at 12:35 a.m. when he crashed in the southbound lanes of the freeway near the Sierra Highway overpass south of Palmdale, Officer Miguel Siordia said.

Sumner was driving at 70 m.p.h. when his car drifted into the median, Siordia said. The car came back onto the freeway, skidded across both lanes and struck the utility pole. Sumner was dead at the scene, Siordia said.
