One of Cuba’s longest serving prisoners has been released, family members said Thursday.

They said Jose Alfredo Mustelier, 46, was freed Wednesday and was at his home in Havana.

The Cuban news agency Prensa Latina reported Wednesday that the Supreme Court reduced his sentence to 20 from 25 years and noted that he had already served 20 years. The decision followed a formal appeal by him and his family.

Mustelier was jailed in 1969 for involvement in a murder and robbery. The authorities describe him as a “counterrevolutionary.”

Human rights groups in Cuba and the United States had campaigned for his release.
