BARCELONA, Spain — Olympics chief Juan Antonio Samaranch is seeking an urgent meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez to sort out problems in preparations for the 1992 Games in his hometown, Barcelona.
“I met Gonzalez six months ago, and things remain just as they were,” Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee, said in an interview published today by the Barcelona newspaper El Periodico.
“It is important that I meet him in the immediate future,” he said.
Samaranch has repeatedly voiced concern in public about delays in preparations for the Olympics. After meeting Gonzalez last September, he said he was deeply worried and that drastic and urgent decisions had to be taken to sort out problems.
Spanish government spokeswoman Rosa Conde said Samaranch had not requested any meeting with Gonzalez.
