RIO : Classes Planned for Migrant Children

Share

About 200 children of migrant workers will get a chance to catch up on their studies over spring break in classes offered by the Rio Elementary School District.

“Our migrant population represents a limited proficiency in English,” said Rio Supt. John McGarry. “We consider those children and their individual needs very important.”

Children of migrant workers represent about 15% of the enrollment in the district, which is west of Camarillo.

The Migrant Education Program, to be held April 9-16, was approved by the Rio board at a meeting Wednesday. Board members voted to spend $10,000 for the first-time program.

McGarry said the idea came from an employee who works with migrant children in the district. Studies will include science, literature, mathematics and English.

“The funds were available and it sounded like a very good idea,” McGarry said.
