California IN BRIEF : DUBLIN : Commander Urges Keeping Camp Parks

Camp Parks, a 2,268-acre reserve training center about 25 miles east of San Francisco, is “extremely vital” and should be kept open despite efforts by local officials to sell the aging base, said the commander of the U.S. Army Reserve. “It makes considerably greater sense in terms of economics and the interests of defense to retain Camp Parks as an important training facility,” said Maj. Gen. William F. Ward. Rep. Pete Stark (D-Hayward) asked Defense Secretary Dick Cheney to keep open several San Francisco Bay-area military installations targeted for closure but to shut Camp Parks.
