Pros and Cons of Decriminalizing Drugs the in U.S.

I can’t agree with social psychologist Carol Tavris who, in her defense of legalizing drugs, suggests that children learn moderate, responsible drug use at their mother’s knee. Intelligent parents are not going to teach Tavris’ “positive reasons--relaxation, meditation, socializing” for using drugs.

Does she wish the family to pass around a joint after dinner to show the kids how to relax? Mothers and fathers with good sense (including my parents) have long had a better solution. If I made the choice to use drugs, it would not be in their home. A consistent good example remains the best teacher.

Tavris should take another look at America. The Peruvian Indians she points to, who chew coca leaves and have no widespread drug problems, are far removed from us. More to the point is her example of the drug parks of Europe and the AIDS-riddled youths there who walk the circle, getting legally high, waiting to die.
