From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Government doctors, pharmacists, dentists and veterinarians went on strike in Ivory Coast, protesting salary cuts of between 10% and 40%. The West African nation’s government responded by banning demonstrations and meetings and deploying troops around hospitals. More than 90 university teachers were arrested after they blocked traffic with their cars in Abidjan in a sympathy protest with the strikers. The 750-member National Union of Senior Health Officers blamed President Felix Houphouet-Boigny for the economic crisis, which was brought on by slumping prices of cocoa.
