Mergers, Acquisitions Decline: Merger and acquisition activity fell 60% during the first quarter from year-earlier levels as the takeover business remained stalled following the collapse of the junk bond market. The number of acquisitions of U.S. firms worth $10 million or more fell to 859 this quarter from 1,131 a year ago, according to preliminary data from Securities Data Corp. The value of these transactions dropped 59% to $39.7 billion from $96.5 billion.
