A 22-year-old inmate at the Peter Pitchess Honor Rancho in Saugus died early this morning, hours after he was involved in a fight in a maximum-security dormitory, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said.

The identity of the Sylmar man, who was awaiting trial on auto theft charges, was not released because his family had not yet been notified, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

The inmate was found unconscious on the floor of a 150-bed dormitory at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday by prison officers responding to an emergency medical call. Officials believe he was involved in fight with other inmates. He was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita, where he died about 3 a.m., sheriff’s Deputy George Ducoulombier said.

Officials would not describe the nature of the man’s injuries or provide details about the fight. Homicide deputies are questioning other inmates.

“It is unknown how many individuals were involved in the altercation or whether the inmate died as a direct result of it,” Ducoulombier said. An autopsy will be performed.
