Outdoors : Lunker Breaks Record for Lake Perris Bass

The Lake Perris record for largemouth bass fell to Jeff Lumpis of Ontario, who caught a 9 1/2-pounder on four-pound test line with a nightcrawler Sunday. The fish measured 22 3/4 inches.

Stan Kiefer, Palm Springs, had a catch that weighed 9 1/4, on a spinner bait.

PUDDINGSTONE RESERVOIR--Spawning bass hitting colored plastics, worms and grubs, but some anglers taking females home with eggs. Southern California Bass Council will post notices urging release. William Navarro, Orange, 6-pound bass in boat rental area, on plastic, released. Bob Brassell, Pomona, caught 20 bluegills on red worms from east shore. Trout still good on yellow and pink Power Bait and nightcrawlers, at swim beach and east shore near piers. LAKE PERRIS--Bass biting. John Burroughs, Moreno Valley, 8 3/4-pound catfish on a nightcrawler. Crickets and mealworms best for bluegills.

LAKE MEAD--Fishing remains slow. Stripers very deep.

LAKE HAVASU--Lake level up two feet and fish more active, with stripers at 35-42 feet. Anchovies best, although trolling with deep-running Bombers and Mann’s deep runners works. Largemouth bass hitting worms and grubs, some crank and spinner baits.

BULLHEAD CITY--Stripers starting to move on river, with a few catches on anchovies. SALTON SEA--Croaker and sargo biting at the state park, on anchovies and corn. Catfish from seven to 10 pounds hitting chicken livers and nightcrawlers at Alamo River and All-American Canal above the state park. Late-night bite from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. is good.

LAKE CACHUMA--Bass starting. Several three- and four-pound largemouths on nightcrawlers. Bob Ramsey, Santa Maria, two-pound trout on Power Bait from shore. San Luis Bass Ambassadors caught 33 fish totaling 76 pounds--biggest 7.89 pounds--all on plastic and released. Trout fair, close to shore. LAKE CASITAS--Bass excellent, moving into spawning beds. Crawdads, worms and nightcrawlers working. John Bartlett, Pasadena, 14-pound bass on a crawdad, released. Ron Pursley, Ojai, 12-pound bass on a plastic worm, off shoreline. Harry Jioras, Chatsworth, two 10-pounders on crawdads at 25 feet. Trout limits from shore. Other species quiet.

PYRAMID LAKE--Big weekend with largemouths. Spinner baits and nightcrawlers best, in Brazos Cove. Dave Schubert, Tehachapi, five largemouths to 5 1/2 pounds on plastic worms. Pat Whitby, Tehachapi, five largemouths averaging three pounds on plastic worms; also a three-pound smallmouth. Limits of trout into weekend.

LAKE PIRU--Trout biting for still-fishermen and trollers using monofilament eight-10 feet deep. Still-fishing in San Felicia Cove good with inflated nightcrawlers and Power Bait. Catfish starting to show. Andrew Harris, Los Angeles, one of eight pounds, and Ross Liddel, Sylmar, 12-pounder, both on mackerel, at north end in shallow waters. Crappie starting around marina, hitting on white minijigs. Few bass, small.

CASTAIC LAKE--Milt Baldwin, Lompoc, 15-pound 12-ounce largemouth, upper lake on Poe’s plug, but generally the big fish have quit biting. Billy Bonelli, 10, of Newhall, caught 4 1/8-pound bass on plastic worm.

IRVINE LAKE--Trout: Rico Curtis, Lomita, 7 1/4 pounds, on crappie jig; Elaine Maxwell, Chino, 5 1/2 pounds, Rapala Fat Rat; Girt Parker, Glendora, four totaling 20 pounds, Power Bait. Bass: Mike Thrasher and son Joshua, Anaheim, 11 1/2 pounds, on worms by Rocky Point.

LAKE SKINNER--Lots of bass in three-pound range. Alice Stephens, Murietta, 5 3/4 and 4 1/2 pounds, Rooster Tail.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Only 25-30 anglers average on weekend but trout hitting around dam and up to Windy Point and Juniper Point, plus south side at Fisher Road. Best results on Power Bait.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Excellent run of largemouth bass continues, most in channel, some by dam. Stripers: Jason Taylor, Downey, 22 pounds, rubber trout in channel. Crappie bite fair.

KERN RIVER-LAKE ISABELLA--Bass to 12 pounds, on worms and crank baits. Two-pound rainbows, west side from Tillie Creek to dam. Some catfish on clams and mackerel. River: Browns to four pounds, rainbows to three, hitting Panther Martins with silver blade.

SAN DIEGO LAKES--Miramar had a record 20-pound 4-ounce bass, but the best fishing is at San Vicente. Hodges improving.
