Teacher With a Real History

Aretired history teacher who will celebrate her 100th birthday Friday, Jennie Lavin has a personal connection to some of the century’s most important events. Former President Richard M. Nixon was a student in Lavin’s seventh-grade civics class.

Lavin came to California in 1924 and worked as a teacher of history and social studies in Whittier until her retirement in 1948.

She became a charter resident of The Alhambra, a skilled nursing facility, in February, 1963, during the first month that its expanded facilities were opened. She has lived there for 27 years.

Lavin will be honored at a 100th birthday party Friday at the Lutheran Health Facility of The Alhambra, 2400 S. Fremont Ave. in Alhambra.
