The city of Ventura is making final preparations for its fifth annual California Beach Party to be held along the Promenade between the Ventura Pier and Surfer’s Point Park April 27-29.

The event began as entertainment for foreign visitors when the city hosted the 1984 Summer Olympic rowing events.

“I just thought they’d like to see a beach party,” Special Events Coordinator Faye Campbell said.

“It was just a little event, but it worked out so well we just built it up over the years.” She added that more than 35,000 people are expected this year.

The party, which has a 1950s theme, begins Friday night with a beach concert featuring the Coasters. Saturday and Sunday events are scheduled to include boardwalk vendors, a rock ‘n’ roll reunion of six bands from the ‘50s, local bands, sporting events, a 1950s and ‘60s convertible show, a fashion show and a body-building competition.

The ‘60s rock duo Jan and Dean is scheduled to perform at the Holiday Inn Saturday night.

“The event . . . appeals to the older group as well as young people,” she said.

Dogs and bikes will not be allowed.
