A 22-year-old inmate at the Peter Pitchess Honor Rancho in Saugus died early Wednesday, hours after he was involved in a fight inside a maximum security dormitory, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.

The identity of the Sylmar man, who was awaiting trial on auto-theft charges, was not released pending notification of relatives, Sheriff’s Deputy George Ducoulombier said.

The inmate was found unconscious on the floor of a 150-bed dormitory about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday by prison officials who responded to an emergency medical call.

Officials believe he was involved in fight with other inmates.

He was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita, where he died about 3 a.m., Ducoulombier said.

“It is unknown how many individuals were involved in the altercation or whether the inmate died as a direct result of it,” Ducoulombier said.
