LOCAL : Deputy Kills Man in Stanton

A 28-year-old man was shot and killed by an Orange County sheriff’s deputy during a confrontation outside a Stanton convenience store late Wednesday, authorities said today.

Kenneth Wade Collins of Garden Grove was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot several times in the back during the 10:30 p.m. incident, according to family members.

The district attorney’s office is investigating the case, but a spokesman declined discuss details.

Authorities said the deputy tried to question Collins about an attempted robbery as Collins stood in front of a Circle K store on the 2200 block of Chapman Avenue in Stanton. Police said Collins began struggling with the officer and fled south on Dale Street.

The deputy caught Collins in the middle of the street and a second fight ensued, Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said. As Collins tried to flee a second time, he dropped a knife into the street, Olson said. Olson said the deputy, who was not identified, shot Collins when he ignored orders to stop running.

Collins’ sister-in-law, Theresa Collins, said witnesses told the family that the deputy beat her brother-in-law with his nightstick. She said Collins, the father of two, was separated from his wife.

Olson declined to comment on the allegations that Collins had been beaten.
