Mayor John Norquist enlisted the ADA Gremlins, a rap group from Milwaukee, to urge city residents to take part in the U.S. Census.

A “posse” of about 90 fourth- and fifth-graders performed backup for the song “In for the Count” and wore T-shirts with that slogan at a downtown mall Wednesday.

The ADA Gremlins, whose name stands for Anti-Drug Alliance, wrote the rap after doing some research on the census, group leader Randy Dulaney said. He said the group, whose members range in age from 13 to 26, have written raps for other community projects.

The 1990 Complete Count Project, a Milwaukee effort to increase minority participation in the census, could help keep Wisconsin from losing a congressional seat in the redistricting that will follow the census, Norquist said.

City, county and state government officials provided a chorus for ADA Gremlins, but Norquist, who frequently sings at the city’s summer festivals, left the rapping to the youngsters.
