Regulators Urge Expanded SEC Powers: Three top federal regulators said they favor sharply expanding the Securities and Exchange Commission’s power over securities markets by handing it control of stock futures now handled by commodities regulators. In testimony before the Senate Banking Committee, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan, SEC Chairman Richard C. Breeden and Treasury Undersecretary Robert Glauber said stripping the Commodity Futures Trading Commission of jurisdiction over stock index futures could prove beneficial to the long-term health of U.S. markets.
