World IN BRIEF : AUSTRALIA : Labor’s Hawke Wins 4th Term

Prime Minister Bob Hawke won the March 24 election, becoming Australia’s first Labor Party leader to win four consecutive terms. His opponent, Liberal Party leader Andrew Peacock, conceded defeat in the close election. Final results were still pending, but preliminary results gave Labor 77 seats in the 148-seat House of Representatives.
