Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : 1st Navy Trident 2s Deployed and at Sea
The Trident 2, the Navy’s newest and deadliest missile, has passed all tests and has been deployed aboard the submarine Tennessee, officials announced in Washington. Despite problems last year and a $125-million fix of the missile’s nozzle system, the program, which has cost $35 billion to date, “was delivered two years early and was 12% below the budget originally provided,” the Navy said. Meanwhile, a 60-foot sailboat and three inflatable boats carrying protesters tried to stop the Tennessee as it left Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in southern Georgia on its first Atlantic patrol.
