World IN BRIEF : KASHMIR : Separatist Leader Killed by Police

A leader of the Muslim separatist movement in Kashmir was killed by police gunfire in Srinagar as he tried to hurl a grenade at police. Ashfaq Majid Wani, 28, was a leader of the Jammu-Kashmir Liberation Front, a leading separatist group seeking independence from India. Three other people died in the melee. A crowd estimated at 40,000 gathered near Wani’s house in an attempt to hold a funeral procession in defiance of a curfew. Soldiers and police prevented the procession.
