Buffalo’s subway and bus system hurtled toward a shutdown as a last-minute rescue plan announced Friday by Mayor James D. Griffin ran into opposition.

Erie County officials, who earlier rejected a utility tax to fund mass transit, criticized Griffin’s new proposal to use county sales taxes and an advance on county operating subsidies to keep the system afloat.

County leaders said they saw no way to avoid a shutdown tonight of the bus and subway system, which carries 120,000 riders a day.
