Keeping Pressure on the Educators

Share

Regarding Rudy Castruita’s commentary, “Santa Ana Schools Meet Challenge of Ethnically Varied Student Body” (March 25), where he states, “Nearly 80% of our graduates pursue some form of higher education. Last year, UCI did a transcript survey and determined that 23% of our seniors were qualified for UC schools. That number is up from the previous year.”

Furthermore, “We recently produced our first bilingual newsletter, and our cable TV bulletin board now offers messages in Spanish as well as in English. The Board of Education believes that it is our responsibility to communicate with the community we serve.”

All this information leads me to believe that the Santa Ana Unified School District has solved the problems that Hispanics face in the Santa Ana schools. The numbers are impressive, but they only reflect one school in that district and do not consider the total student population of “approximately 43,000 (78% of whom are Hispanic).”

Given the accounts of high crime, high dropout rates, gang problems and many other problems related to poor education in the Hispanic community, we should not let the pressure off these school officials. The future of our children is too important to be falsely misled by political rhetoric.
