Drug lords threatened Saturday to place an 11,000-pound bomb in the capital every time one of their members is extradited to the United States.

The group of cocaine barons known as “the Extraditables” also threatened in a statement to plant a similar bomb unless police free two residents of the town of Medellin who it said had been detained.

In their statement, the drug traffickers also threatened to execute judges, politicians and members of the Cano family, who own the Espectador newspaper, which has campaigned against the drug trade.

“For every Colombian handed over to the United States, we will place a bomb of 5,000 kilograms (11,000 pounds) of dynamite in the capital of the republic,” they said in a statement.

The traffickers made the threats three days after the Colombian government resumed its policy of extraditing drug traffickers to face charges in the United States after a two-month pause. Fernando Gutierrez, 34, was sent to face drug charges in Arizona.
