Redistributing Foreign Aid

Share

Finally, someone has told it like it is about America’s senseless foreign aid program. Harry G. Summers’ column (“Throw Off the Slavery of Passionate Attachments,” Op-Ed Page, March 22) is an excellent critique of the United States’ blind support of foreign countries, good or bad.

When Summers asks why we are paying more than $3 billion annually to Israel he must know the reason. The Israeli lobby pays to support many congressmen for their vote in getting aid. This obscene lobbying power is typical of the kind of campaign assistance to congressmen from gun, trucking, tobacco and other agencies of questionable benefit to our society.

Certainly, there are some in our government who don’t participate in this political money market. But unfortunately there are enough seats for sale that our great country is beginning to operate like a banana republic where all government services are for sale. Pity.
