NATION IN BRIEF : HAWAII : Families Flee Homes in Path of Hot Lava

Dozens more families packed their belongings and fled as lava from Kilauea Volcano came within a mile of their Kalapana Gardens homes on the big island. Authorities had warned earlier that one of two lava flows was about to overtake some houses, but then said that flow appeared to have slowed. Officials have evacuated 50 of the 125 homes in the subdivision.
