A clown with the Moscow Circus disappeared after the show closed here this weekend and the case has been turned over to police and U.S. government officials, a spokesman for the troupe said today.

“At this point we’re just concerned with his safety and welfare,” said Brian Lawson, publicist for Bally’s Reno where the circus performed for two months before closing on Sunday.

Lawson said there’s no indication Sergei Uhanov is attempting to defect from the Soviet Union.

“That would only be speculation at this point,” he said. “He gave no outward sign that he was unhappy. He didn’t seem upset about anything. He simply wasn’t where he was supposed to be when the troupe left.”

Lawson added that performers with the famous Moscow Circus are treated regally in the Soviet Union and usually have good salaries and living conditions.
