THE SIDELINES : All-Stars Compete in Japan

Dexter Howard of Pepperdine and Andre Tate of the University of Cincinnati were the top scorers as the West and the East won college all-star games today in the Japan Classic. Tate scored 17 points and led the East over the Midwest 100-91 in the opener, and Howard scored 25 points as the West routed the South 102-88.

Ricky Calloway of Kansas was high scorer for the Midwest with 16 points. Lee Coward of Missouri led the South with 15 points.

Several NBA scouts were among the spectators for the round-robin exhibition, which will continue until Sunday.

The West is coached by Lou Campanelli of California, the Midwest by Tom Davis of Iowa, and the South by Gene Bartow of Alabama-Birmingham.
