Census Bureau Triples Operators for Spanish

Share

The U.S. Census Bureau has tripled the number of Spanish-speaking operators to answer questions about the 1990 census form, John Reeder, the bureau’s regional director said in Los Angeles Friday.

Reeder also announced the opening of 20 centers around Los Angeles where English census forms can be exchanged for Spanish ones. The number of Spanish-language telephone operators has been increased from 88 to 235 to take care of the volume of calls that earlier this week had reached 7,000 a day, creating a back-up that discouraged many callers from trying to get through.

The toll free numbers are 1-800-283-6826 and 1-800-999-1990. To locate neighborhood service centers, officials urge people to dial 411 and ask for the number of the Census Bureau office in their area.
