WORLD IN BRIEF : SPAIN : Police Seize 1,000 Forged Dali Works
Police seized more than 1,000 fake works attributed to the late Salvador Dali and said this was only a small part of worldwide traffic in forged works attributed to the artist. Etchings, lithographs, tapestries and ceramics purported to have been produced by the surrealist Spanish master were seized at the premises of a Barcelona art dealer together with crates filled with fake certificates of authenticity. Experts estimate the annual value of fake Dali works sold around the world, mainly in the United States and Japan, at $600 million.
