From Times Staff and Wire Reports

PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat, after meeting with Pope John Paul II in Rome, said he has had secret, indirect contacts with Israeli leaders to discuss the Middle East peace process and the Palestinian uprising. In an interview with Italian television, Arafat said former Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir had sent emissaries with messages. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli government, which outlaws unauthorized contacts with the Palestine Liberation Organization.
