The head of Poland’s feared security police apologized for its past abuses of power Friday as Parliament debated its abolition.

Deputies in the Solidarity-dominated Sejm applauded as Gen. Jerzy Karpacz told them: “I know that some people present in this hall today have suffered in the past from the security service. I would like to bow deeply before them and say sorry.”

His remarks came amid debate on a bill disbanding the security police and the Citizens’ Militia and replacing them with an Office for the Protection of the State and a national police force.
