Emergency Shelter

Sundowners Program L.A. County Department of Public Social Services 974-1234 (5 p.m.-8 a.m.) Offers emergency vouchers to single adults and women with children for one night stay at local motels; three nights over weekends.

Cold Weather Emergency Shelter Program (800) 548-6047 Offers information on shelters open during cold weather (when temperature in immediate area falls below 40 degrees or below 50 degrees with 50% chance of rain). Information is updated after 11 a.m. each day.

Beacon Light Mission 525 Broad Ave. Wilmington Open seven days a week; breakfast: chapel service, door opens 5:45 a.m., breakfast begins at 6:30 a.m.; dinner: evening chapel opens 6:45 p.m., dinner begins at 8. Facilities for 28 men, at least 18 years old and alcohol- and drug-free.

Clare Foundation 901 Pico Blvd. Santa Monica 450-5123 Drop-in center for homeless people. Provides referrals to shelters and other resources. Call for hours.

Homeless Women’s Drop-In Center (Behavioral Health Services) 531 N. Marine Ave. Wilmington 549-2710 Services for homeless women include food, clothing and referrals to recovery programs, shelters and other resources. Call first.

Soup Kitchens

House of Yahweh 4430 W. 147th St. Lawndale 675-1384 Open seven days a week: breakfast, 10-11 a.m.; lunch, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

The Crossing 1450 W. 7th St. San Pedro Breakfast: Thursday and Friday 7-10 a.m., Saturday 10:30 a.m.; dinner, 7 p.m. Saturday.

Medical Care

Harbor Free Clinic 615 S. Mesa St. San Pedro 547-0202 Offers evening appointments only. Call Monday through Thursday after 10 a.m. to set up appointments. Services: General medical, birth control, VD tests, pregnancy tests, Pap smears. No AIDS testing.

South Bay Free Clinic 1807 Manhattan Beach Blvd. Manhattan Beach 376-0791 742 W. Gardena Blvd. Gardena 327-2535 Comprehensive health services: general medical, dental, AIDS testing, family planning, pre-natal care. Open to all. No fees, but donations are requested. Call for hours.
