St. Petersburg Wins Sailing Title

St. Petersburg, Fla., junior skippers spurred their senior team to an overall victory in Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s U.S. Yacht Club Challenge Cup Saturday to earn the title of the best club in the country.

Mark Mendelblatt in the two-man Flying Junior dinghy, and Brett Davis in the single-handed Laser each finished the regatta with 13 wins after throwing out their five worst races for a total score of 9.75 points.

St. Petersburg’s senior skipper in the Schock-35 class finished fifth without scoring a win. The Schock-35s were allowed to throw out their worst two races.

In the final combined scoring St. Petersburg wound up in a three-way tie with Seawanhaka Yacht Club of Oyster Bay, N.Y. and San Diego. The tie was broken by head-to-head results. Seawanhaka and San Diego finished tied for second.
