Officials said today they quelled uprisings at eight jails where inmates had revolted in solidarity with convicts still occupying part of Strangeways Prison for a ninth day.

One of the most serious revolts ended this morning at Bristol Prison, 120 miles southwest of London, according to the Home Office. More than 400 inmates had occupied three wings of the facility, where 12 guards and 13 convicts were wounded in clashes during the weekend siege.

Officials said they believed the Bristol uprising was incited by convicts who were transferred from Dartmoor Prison, a medium-security facility where a similar uprising occurred Saturday and where at least one person was confirmed dead.

The British Broadcasting Corp. showed footage of massive destruction inside the Dartmoor jail, which was built in 1810 to house prisoners of war during the Napoleonic period.

Guards said convicts tried to crush them with blocks of granite weighing about 110 pounds.
