NEWPORT BEACH : Explorers Planning Their First Reunion

Share

The Newport Beach Police Explorers next month will hold the first reunion in the group’s 18-year history.

The Explorers program, an offshoot of Boy Scouts of America, is a career-interest program for youths from 14 to 21. Stan Bressler, a 26-year veteran of the Newport Beach Police Department and founder of its program, said about 30 members of the group have gone on to careers in law enforcement.

At least 60 of the 400 or so past members have confirmed that they will attend the reunion, some traveling from as far as Oregon and New Mexico, Bressler said. He still refers to former Explorers as “kids,” although some of them are well into their 30s.

“They’re spread all over, obviously,” he said. “It’s just that the kids are really into the program, and they’re supporting it by coming back to this reunion.”

Organizers are digging out old slides of the explorers dating to 1972 to show at the dinner, which will be held May 19 at the Fluor Daniel Inc. building in Irvine. Anyone interested in attending should call Bressler at (714) 644-3688.
