From Times staff and Wire reports

A land mine planted by the Irish Republican Army exploded beneath a military vehicle, killing four soldiers and wounding four other people, officials said. The IRA claimed responsibility for the blast near Downpatrick, 20 miles south of Belfast, the deadliest attack since 1983 on the British-trained Ulster Defense Regiment. “Yet again another horror,” British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said. In Belfast, two men were arrested after a 1,000-pound bomb was discovered outside a central city police station inside a jeep disguised as a police vehicle. The bomb was defused by explosives experts.
