WORLD : Soviet Envoy Found Slain
The Soviet Union’s second-ranking diplomat was found shot to death in a gutter today in this South American country, police said.
No group or individual claimed responsibility for the killing, and the motive was unknown.
The body of Stasis Obukauskas, 41, second secretary and consul in the Soviet Embassy, was found with three bullet wounds in the head, said Police Inspector Ronald Gayadhar.
Police said Obukauskas’ body was in a gutter along Kennedy Highway, the main road between Paramaribo and the capital’s Zanderij International Airport.
