Edmundo Mireles Jr., an FBI agent who was wounded in a Miami shoot-out and later joined a class-action lawsuit accusing the bureau of discrimination against Latinos, is the winner of the agency’s first Medal of Valor.

Mireles and fellow agents were involved in a shoot-out with suspected bank robbers in 1986. The Medal of Valor is given for “exceptional acts of heroism in the face of life-threatening situations.”
