Nation : Ex-Governor of W.Va. Indicted
Former Gov. Arch Moore agreed to plead guilty today after he was indicted on five federal counts, including extortion, income tax violations, mail fraud and obstruction of justice.
Republican Moore, who served three terms as governor, was charged with using his position as governor-elect and governor to extort about $573,000 in 1985. He was also charged on two counts of filing false personal income tax returns for the years 1984 and 1985.
The fourth count charged him with mail fraud, for allegedly scheming to defraud the state of his salary and other benefits as governor by funneling about $100,000 in cash to his 1984 election campaign. The fifth charged him with obstruction of justice by falsifying documents and allegedly trying to get witnesses to give false testimony and allegedly giving false testimony to federal agents.
Moore faces 36 years in prison and $1.2 million in fines.
