3 in West Germany Accused of Spying
Three people, including two senior West German government employees, have been arrested on suspicion of spying for the Soviet Union and for East Germany’s former Communist regime, officials said Thursday.
Rolf Hannich, a spokesman for the chief federal prosecutor’s office in Karlsruhe, said a Foreign Ministry employee was arrested Tuesday and an official of the federal border police was taken into custody on Wednesday.
Hannich said both suspects were in custody “on suspicion of working as agents for an East European country.”
Sources in Bonn said the Foreign Ministry employee had worked in Paris for the West German mission to the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
