CYPRESS : Private School Plans to Move Into Oxford

Share

A private Christian school of 700 students has won City Council approval to operate out of what was formerly Oxford Junior High School on Orange Avenue.

Greater Long Beach Christian School will lease three buildings at the school, which was closed more than nine years ago because of declining enrollment. Since that time, the city has leased the site from the Anaheim Unified School District. Part of the facility is used by the Cypress Recreation and Park District, and the remainder is leased out to private groups.

The organizations leasing the buildings will not be affected by the school moving in, City Manager Darrell Essex said.

School officials plan to transfer students to Cypress from their current school in Paramount in southeast Los Angeles County. The school will house students in grades seven through 12 and 46 staff members.

Three modular units will be added to house a weight room, band room and maintenance facility. Eleven storage bins will also be brought onto the school site.

City and school officials are negotiating the terms of the lease, Essex said.

The Christian school is expected to begin classes in Cypress this fall.
