Academy Awards and Images of Physical Disability

In response to the letters of Lake Nofer and Vietnam Green Beret Pete Laurence (also April 1), I would like to say I agree with them 100% about Stone’s negative motion picture.

Again and again, this most left of all leftist directors has used his God-given talents to lash out at the country for which he served in Vietnam (and in which he has reaped the benefits of living and making movies, I might add).

What Nofer and Laurence may not know is that the true story of Stone’s subject, partly paralyzed veteran Ron Kovic, is inspiring and that his physical problem “doesn’t limit him in the end” (as Nofer writes of artist/writer Christy Brown).

Kovic’s story is a rather short one, but it is one filled with the suffering that Kovic survived and conquered ; it is a story that gives me hope and peace.
