HUNTINGTON BEACH : College to Use Gift for Scholarships

Share

Golden West College has received a $40,000 endowment to establish scholarships for students enrolled in the fields of transportation and automotive technology.

Golden West College President Judith Valles said the endowment came from the estate of the late Herman R. Tate, a longtime Orange County resident and transportation entrepreneur who died last November.

Valles said students taking auto body and auto frame technology courses also will be able to apply for scholarships to be created from the Tate endowment.

“Gifts like the one from Mr. Tate allow Golden West College to expand programs and enhance students’ educational opportunities,” Valles said.

“Endowments provide the college with a means to develop areas that may not otherwise be funded by the states.”

Tate started his business with a three-car taxi company in Newport Beach.

Ultimately he expanded his transportation services to include services to 12 cities. Before his death, Tate had directed that his estate be used in philanthropic work.

The Herman R. Tate Fund was established after his death, and it was that fund that gave the college its endowment.
