THE SIDELINES : Team Canada Beats Germans

Steve Yzerman scored one goal and set up three others today, leading Team Canada to a 5-1 victory over West Germany in the World Hockey Championships. The Soviet Union, winner of a record 21 world titles, routed Group A newcomer Norway 9-1 at Bern in the preliminary round opener.

Norway, playing in the championships for the first time in 25 years, and West Germany are expected to battle for last place in the eight-team tournament.

The United States was to face Czechoslovakia at Fribourg and Sweden was to play Finland in later games during opening day of the two-week tournament.
