Six States Call for Probe of Meat Packers: Prosecutors from six Midwestern states called for a federal investigation of what they call an unhealthy concentration of companies in the meatpacking industry. The letter to U.S. Atty. Gen. Dick Thornburgh from the state attorneys general said the largest meatpackers were broadening their hold on the nation’s meat supply by purchasing feedlots and other facilities where animals are fattened before slaughter. Three packers--IBP of Dakota City, Neb.; Excel of Wichita, Kan., and ConAgra of Omaha, Neb.--control nearly two-thirds of the $21-billion steer and heifer slaughter market, according to an industry group.
