Homicide detectives from the San Diego Police Department and the Mexican State Judicial Police in Tijuana are looking for two gunmen suspected of killing one migrant and wounding a second during a weekend robbery attempt.

The incident occurred at 3 a.m. Sunday west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry and a third of a mile north of the border, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Quoting Mexican police officials, Robinson said seven migrants were confronted on the U. S. side of the border by two gunmen, who attempted to rob them as they made their way north.

Carlos Angulo Serrano, 23, of Tijuana and Juan Antonio Rubalcava, 19, of Zacatecas tried to run from the robbers. Angulo, who was shot at least once, died at the scene. Rubalcava was found by Mexican police at 5 a.m., lying on a street in downtown Tijuana, with a bullet wound in the right jaw. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

The gunmen escaped, and their whereabouts was unknown. It was also unknown whether they succeeded in robbing their victims, or if anyone else was injured in the shootings.
